Head on collisions are more dangerous that side impact or rear impact collisions because of Newton’s First Law of Motion (“an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by another force”).
In the case of a head on collision, both objects are moving forward with a certain force and are “acted upon” by the other vehicle. This abrubt halt causes more trauma to the vehicles occupants than if they are hit from behind (which propels them forward with a different amount of force) or from the side (which changes their direction of travel).
The injuries usually sustained in such accidents are blunt trauma to the head (i.e. head injury from contact with the steering wheel, dashboard, other seats in the car) or spinal cord injuries from the abrupt change in momentum.
These injuries are always much worse and much more likely to be fatal without seatbelts and airbags.
