I want to connect a PS3 and my tv to a home theater system. I thought that I could use the optical audio out port on my TV to output sound from the PS3 but I’ve heard that you must connect each individual device to the receiver.

Your TV’s optical out may only output 2 channel stereo. I believe that is the standard for most TVs. To get the full sound performance you must route all devices to a receiver first then to the TV. So like everyone said, hook everything up to the receiver with HDMI cables. Then one HDMI cable from the receiver’s ouput to the TV. So now you just have to select your devices from the receiver.
I recommend monoprice.com for the cheapest, HDMI cables–they do the job.
I also recommend a Logitech Harmony 700 to replace all your remotes.
